Donna Vining
Owner, Vining Design Associates

Where did you grow up, and how did it affect your sense of design?
I was surrounded by great design growing up in Dallas, Texas. My mother took me to every home show and taught me a lot about the “finer things.” I believe I was truly blessed to grow up with such a wonderful, strong woman who loved beauty and really appreciated the arts.

Where are your favorite places to shop?
I have my favorites like High Point, antique shops and art galleries all across the world, but I’m not afraid to open a new door. You never know what’s inside just waiting to be discovered.

What are you excited about in the world of design?
Universal design and sustainable products are very important. Protecting our health and improving our ability to function as we age is what my life is all about as a designer.

What originally inspired you to become an interior designer?
My Mother. When I was eight years old my parents remodeled our home and my mother worked very closely with an architect. When I was 13 she opened an antique shop and the rest, as they say, is history.

What do you feel is your best quality as a designer?
My clients tell me that I am an excellent listener, a great problem solver and extremely fun to work with.

What is your definition of good design?
When my clients are happy and proud of the project.

This kitchen was a labor of love from the very beginning. I created a warm and inviting, yet functional kitchen as the heart of this American Colonial home. Despite the home’s classic architecture, it has been updated with the latest technology. The island’s cabinetry has a distressed finish, supporting a beautiful wood top complete with vegetable sink and built-in stainless trivet and knife slots. The Palladian windows open to a lovely side yard and walking path that leads to a beautiful lake. The pantry is complete with a window that provides light, which save energy on lighting. It also has a wonderful appliance center to hide small appliances and any mess that they may bring. White carrara marble was chosen for the countertops in keeping with what was used by most in the time period.
